Significance of Research — Writing a PhD Research Proposal

When writing a PhD research proposal, consider the significance of your research.  You should be able to show the reader why your research is important, and what contribution your study make to the field of knowledge.  Further more it is important to detail the wider implications or uses of your study to the general body of knowledge.  A very important section in the research proposal is the literature review in most instances this is written as a separate chapter.  The literature review should discuss the relationship of your proposed research to other local, and international research’s in the field.  The PhD literature review serves four main functions.

First it focuses on what has been done before in other words you are discussing what other major related research studies have previously been conducted by others, highlighting how your study will fill the current knowledge gap.  Then it outlines the instruments you will use in your study, and justifies why such instruments are used over others.  Thirdly, it is essential that the literature review points out why it is necessary to conduct your research.  Finally, it sets the boundaries for your studies. It is also known as the limitations.

Many different types of instruments or tools can be used to gather data.  Weather interviews, surveys, content analysis, case studies, or mythology’s analysis where used all these must be clearly detailed in this section.  This may include quantitative or qualitative research that you plan to undertake.  Remember that the course of method should correlate with your research question, or questions in other words if the bulk of your research involves interviews, and surveys then the research methods you used involve qualitative methods.  If your research lies heavily on analysis then you maybe using more of a quantitative nature of study.  In short you question or questions, and the data gathering tools you will use.

Finally, if the study requires it include, and theoretical or conceptional framer that you will employ.  The data analysis should clearly specify how you will present your results, and discuss any statistical tests you will use.  This sections discusses the methods used to prove your hypothesis if there are any one tip for this is to properly deal with each hypothesis separately, and mention the analysis that will be conducted.

The PhD research proposal has a section that discusses what you think will happen based on your intuition, and the exploration study you have done up until this point.  This is the section on expected results.  To some extent you should already have some expected outcome based on the research conducted in the past.  This section answers questions about what are the possible outcomes of your work for example are they positive, negative, or there is no correlation between the valuables.  Which one would lead to the most fruitful research work, and why what are your key assumptions, and what are the limitations of working under these assumptions, and why?  You may use a pilot study or other fragments of other similar research to forecast outcomes.  If your research requires human participants to be interviewed or surveyed then you will need to gather the interviewers, and arrange a list of questions or a survey.

Organizing the PhD Research Proposal

Organizing the PhD research proposal is crucial to its overall success. List the time and dates of each step of your research process.  Make it as specific as possible.  Use the timeline to serve as a guide only.  The budget of costs involving your study need not be too detailed.  List any costs that will be in cured as well as list any source of funds.  Finally, you should indicate the primary references in your initial appropriate text you signed it in your proposal.  Never under estimate the value of a good reference use.  This should reflect all research. This indicates that your research is an activity of finding out by doing.  We now turn to writing the PhD research proposal.  A well structured proposal is a well written proposal.  Remember to keep your writing clear, concise, and to the point.

In every step of writing, consider the most basic unit, which is the paragraph.  Organize your paragraphs and have a topic sentence, and controlling idea. Explain, elaborate or define the idea. Provide evidence, examples, or ideas.  Avoid long paragraphs of 250 plus words.  Remember another forwarding idea one main idea to one paragraph.  Furthermore keep your sentences simple; include only one idea in each sentence.

PhD research proposals are convincing as well as concise rather than obscuring idea’s through excessive words and verbosity.  PhD research proposals are structured with about ten sub elements and are convincing and concise.  They should not obscure idea’s with excessive words, and verbosity.  Finally we come to saving your work only two things to remember save frequently, and add multiple copies, and save multiple copies the proposal is more then a plan it provides the supervisor , and consequently the staff with the information on which they can approve, and or suggest modifications to the research project a highly explicate proposal provided the research is conducted properly clearly documented, and has a high likelihood of being carried out and accepted.

Organizing and planning are paramount to successful dissertation writing. By choosing an interesting topic that is not to restricting or overly complex, PhD students will be better able to write an accepted dissertation proposal and ultimately an accepted PhD dissertation. The proposal helps to plan and organize the dissertation, which is why it is so important that it is done right.
